Wednesday, 01 November 2006
The Cable Commisssion is considering a second public access channel funded by cable franchise fees of up to $250-300K/year, These funds currently go into the general fund, so additional taxes would be required if the taxpayers fund this channel. The Cable Commission is likely to vote in favor.

Think Outside The Box on Middle School

Seizing the Pierce Trust ballfield to expand the middle school would involve an expensive and divisive legal, environmental, and cultural battle, with the fallback the Jones Avenue site. Perhaps the school board should think outside the box on this one. The new vocational
education school is being built at Pease Tradeport.
That will leave the old campus in Stratham vacant, and likely easily adapted to being a middle
school. It is large, centrally located and could serve
the entire school district. |

By a 6-3 vote the city council mandated adding 1% to the cost of new or renovated city buildings to purchase art. The program is for projects costing $2-15 million. Councilors Pantelakos, Grasso and Whitehouse voted for the taxpayers on this issue. Next time the other councilors are complaining about fixed costs, remind them they set this one in motion. |

The city attorney says the city could use Eminent Domain to seize the Pierce Trust in order to add to the current middle school. A rough estimate of cost to taxpayers for the land would be $2MM. For a detailed discussion, including an update on the middle school committee click here to read Foster's Gretyl MacAlaster's account. |
